November 2024

'Dvorak -

'Cello Concerto in D' and more.

Saturday 30th November, 3.30pm.

Grimsby Minster

The GSO's final concert of the year, on November 30th at 3.30pm at the Minster, happens to be both a celebration of a relatively new local talent and a commemoration of an older international one.

Forty years ago the distinguished French 'cellist Paul Tortelier was the soloist in Antonin Dvorak's 'Cello Concerto in D with the GSO under the baton of Neville Turner; this year the same concerto will feature local 'cellist Katharine Ley, with Susan Grant conducting.

There are further connections - Daisy Turner, ('cellist and Neville's wife) who played in that concert in 1984 is still a member of the orchestra, as are most of the  (now superannuated) 'cello section - Jane Powell, Joan Date and Martyn Pidgen - as well as Deirdre Perry and Anne Lawson (both violas).

The concert's other pieces are ever-popular and recognisable choices:

Giacchino Rossins's lively overture 'The Barber of Seville' will open the programme and the first half will be completed by Franz Shubert's Symphony no. 8 ('The Unfinished'), both tuneful and lively compositions that never fail to please.
